How this needlepoint thread calculator works
This calculator uses a transparent planning model rather than claiming an exact result. It estimates the working thread path, multiplies it by the number of DMC plies used, and compares that with the six 8m plies in a skein:
skeins = stitches × path_per_stitch × stitch_factor × plies_used ÷ (800cm × 6)
For tent stitches, half-cross generally uses the least thread, continental uses more, and basketweave uses more than continental. Decorative-stitch factors are allowances for planning only: their real consumption changes with the repeat, the shape being filled, and compensation at its edges.
Coarser mesh requires a longer path per stitch and often more plies for full coverage. Tension, painted canvas thickness, starting and ending tails, and individual stitching style can all shift the result.
