How much thread do I need for needlepoint?

Thread estimates are useful for planning, but they are never exact. Two stitchers can cover the same canvas with different amounts of floss because tension, starting and ending tails, painted canvas thickness, compensation, and the number of plies all affect consumption.
The calculator gives you a transparent starting point and rounds each color up to a whole skein. For dye-lot safety, buy another 10–15% beyond the calculated amount when the project is large.
The four inputs that matter
1. Stitch count by color
A fully stitched area contains width × height × mesh² stitches. A 5 × 5 inch area on 13 mesh contains 4,225 stitches. For painted canvases, estimate the share occupied by each color; charted designs usually provide a count.
2. Mesh size
Mesh count is the number of canvas holes per linear inch. Coarser mesh makes a longer stitch; finer mesh makes a shorter stitch but places more stitches into each square inch.
3. Number of plies
DMC embroidery floss contains six separable 8m plies. If you stitch with four plies, a skein supplies more working lengths than when you stitch with eight. The calculator suggests eight plies for 10–13 mesh, six for 14 mesh, five for 16 mesh, and four for 18 mesh. Treat these as starting points and adjust after testing coverage on your own canvas.
4. Stitch path
Half-cross generally uses the least thread. Continental uses more, while basketweave uses more than continental and is valued for its durability and resistance to distortion. Decorative stitches are less predictable because their repeat and compensated edges change the thread path.
The planning formula
skeins = stitches × path_per_stitch × stitch_factor × plies_used ÷ (800cm × 6)
This accounts for all six plies in a standard DMC skein. The result is rounded up separately for each color because leftover floss from one color cannot cover another.
Worked example
A fully stitched 5 × 5 inch design on 13 mesh contains 4,225 stitches. Suppose it uses eight plies and is divided between three colors:
- Black: 2,500 basketweave stitches
- Red: 1,200 continental stitches
- White: 525 basketweave stitches

The calculator rounds this example to 5 skeins total. For a large background or an important dye lot, add one more skein to the dominant color.
Best practice: Stitch a one-inch test square with your chosen thread, ply count, and tension. Its real consumption is a better calibration than any universal table.
