Needlepoint mesh count guide

Mesh count — the number of canvas holes per inch — is one of the most important decisions in needlepoint. It affects the detail level, thread usage, project size, and the time your project will take.
What is mesh count?
Mesh count (or "mesh size" or "canvas count") refers to the number of holes per linear inch on your needlepoint canvas. A 13 mesh canvas has 13 holes per inch, meaning each stitch is approximately 1/13 of an inch wide.

13 mesh — the standard choice
13 mesh is the most common needlepoint canvas size, especially for painted canvases. It offers a good balance between detail and stitch size — small enough for reasonably detailed designs, but large enough that projects don't take forever to complete.
Most needlepoint kits and painted canvases are designed for 13 mesh. If you're a beginner, start here.
18 mesh — for fine detail
18 mesh allows for significantly more detail in the same physical space. A 5×5 inch design on 18 mesh has 324 stitches per square inch, compared to 169 on 13 mesh. This means:
- More detail and smoother curves in designs
- Smaller stitches that are harder to see
- Longer project completion time (more stitches)
- A shorter working-thread path per stitch
How mesh size affects thread usage
Finer mesh means less thread per stitch but more stitches per square inch. Here's how one six-strand DMC skein performs in our basketweave planning model. Each row uses the suggested starting ply count for that mesh:

Ply count has as much impact as mesh count. These figures are planning estimates; your own one-inch test square is the best calibration for tension and coverage.
Choosing mesh: Use 13 mesh for most projects. Choose 18 mesh when you need fine detail (jewelry, portraits, miniatures). Choose 10 mesh for large items like rugs where you want quick coverage.
Thread thickness by mesh
The thread you use should match your mesh size. Using thread that's too thick for fine mesh will make your canvas lumpy and distort the shape. Too thin, and your coverage will be sparse.
- 10–13 mesh: Start with 7–8 plies of divisible cotton floss, or use a thread designed for this mesh
- 14 mesh: Start around 6 plies and test the coverage
- 16 mesh: Start around 5 plies and test the coverage
- 18 mesh: Start around 4 plies, or use a single-strand thread designed for 18 mesh
These are starting points, not rules. Dark paint, long decorative stitches, and personal tension can change the number of plies needed.
