Cross stitch to needlepoint conversion calculator

Use the same chart grid on needlepoint canvas and see how the finished size changes. Each chart square becomes one needlepoint stitch.

Examples: 14-count Aida, 28-count linen.
Original cross-stitch size 10 × 7.14 in
Needlepoint design size 10.77 × 7.69 in 107.7% of original size
Cut needlepoint canvas 16.77 × 13.69 in includes blank working margin

This converts geometry only. Fractional stitches, backstitch, beads, blended colors, and very detailed confetti may need redesign before a cross-stitch chart works comfortably as needlepoint.

Conversion formula

Needlepoint size equals the chart stitch count divided by the target canvas mesh. A 140-stitch-wide chart becomes about 10.77 inches wide on 13 mesh and 7.78 inches wide on 18 mesh.

For evenweave worked over two threads, the effective cross-stitch count is half the fabric thread count. A chart stitched over two on 28-count linen therefore has the same geometric size as it would on 14-count Aida.

Charts that convert best

Bold charts with full stitches and distinct color areas convert more directly than charts that depend on fractional stitches, backstitch outlines, or hundreds of isolated colors. Confirm that you have permission to reproduce any commercial chart.
