How stitch coverage is calculated

Coverage is calculated by dividing the total thread length in one skein by the thread consumed per stitch:

stitches_per_skein = skein_length / (stitch_factor × thread_per_stitch)

A standard DMC floss skein contains six separate 8m plies. The usable working length is therefore affected by how many plies are stitched together. Thread use also varies with mesh, stitch path, tension, tails, and compensation at the edge of a shape.

Does stitch type change how much area a skein covers?

Yes. Half-cross generally uses the least thread, continental uses more, and basketweave uses more than continental. Decorative stitches vary by repeat and shape, so their factors are approximate.

Why does finer mesh give more stitches per skein?

Finer mesh has smaller stitches, but it also commonly uses fewer plies. Both effects can increase the stitch count per skein; the area covered still depends on the square of the mesh count.
