How our estimates work

NeedlepointCalc is a planning tool, not a substitute for a stitched coverage test. We publish the assumptions below so you can understand—and adjust—the estimate before buying materials.

Canvas size

design_inches = stitch_count ÷ mesh_count

The selected finishing margin is added to both sides of each dimension. Always confirm the required margin with your finisher for belts, shaped ornaments, stand-ups, and specialty pieces.

DMC floss quantity

skeins = stitches × path_per_stitch × stitch_factor × plies_used ÷ (800cm × 6)

DMC six-strand embroidery floss contains six separable 8m plies. The mesh model estimates the length of the working-thread path; the stitch factor allows for the path on the back. Results are rounded up by color.

Belt sizing

stitched_length = measured_belt_length − leather_allowance

The measured belt length means buckle fold to the hole normally worn. Four inches is provided as an editable planning default because published needlepoint belt instructions commonly reserve part of the finished length for leather. Finishers vary in buckle construction, row loss, and hole placement, so the result must be approved by the selected finisher before stitching.

Cording

cut_length_per_strand = perimeter × joining_allowance × cutting_multiplier

Circle and rectangle perimeters are exact geometry; oval perimeter uses Ramanujan's approximation. The 10% joining allowance and 3×–5× cutting multipliers are editable planning assumptions. Twist take-up depends on the fiber, strand bundle, tension, and cording method, so a sample is required.

Cross-stitch chart conversion

needlepoint_inches = chart_stitches ÷ target_mesh

The original cross-stitch size uses fabric count divided by one or two, depending on whether the chart is worked over one or over two fabric threads. The tool converts physical dimensions only; it does not reinterpret fractional stitches, backstitch, beads, or blended colors.

Suggested ply counts

Needlepoint.com lists 7–8 DMC plies for 13 count and four for 18 count. The calculator uses eight and four respectively. Defaults for 10, 12, 14, and 16 mesh are interpolated planning values rather than directly sourced standards. All ply counts remain adjustable.

Stitch factors

The Royal School of Needlework documents how continental and basketweave travel through the canvas, supporting the fact that their thread paths differ. It does not publish the exact numerical ratios used here. Tent-stitch factors are therefore marked provisional, and decorative-stitch factors are marked experimental because compensation and repeat size can materially change consumption.

Purchase allowance

Per-color results include a separate purchase quantity calculated from the base estimate plus 15%, rounded up to a whole skein. This allowance is intended for ordinary tails, tension, compensation, mistakes, and dye-lot safety. It does not make an experimental factor exact.

What the estimate does not know

  • Your personal tension and preferred coverage
  • Thread lost to starts, stops, knots, tails, and mistakes
  • Compensation around irregular painted shapes
  • Dye-lot availability and finishing requirements

Add 10–15% for ordinary planning and more for a large uninterrupted background. A one-inch test square with your actual canvas and thread is the best way to calibrate a major project.

Physical validation protocol

  1. Test 13 mesh with 7–8 DMC plies and 18 mesh with four plies.
  2. Run basketweave, continental, and half-cross separately using a fixed starting length.
  3. Stitch at least 200 stitches per sample, with fixed starting and ending tail allowances.
  4. Repeat each combination at least three times and, where possible, use more than one stitcher.
  5. Record consumed working length per stitch and compare the median with the model.

A tent-stitch factor will be promoted from provisional to calibrated only after the median absolute percentage error is at or below 15% across the test set. Decorative stitches remain experimental until their repeat and edge-compensation cases have separate samples.
