Needlepoint thread coverage chart explained
Thread coverage charts are useful only when they state the canvas, thread, ply count, and stitch method behind the number.
Coverage is a model, not a fixed label
A skein does not cover a universal number of square inches. Mesh count determines how many stitches fit in the area, while stitch type determines the path the thread takes through the canvas.
For strandable floss, ply count also changes the available working length. A six-ply, 8-meter skein contains 48 meters of individual fiber, but using four plies at once provides roughly 12 meters of four-ply working thread before allowances.
The four inputs a useful chart needs
A defensible coverage estimate must identify all four of these values. If a chart omits one, treat it only as a rough rule of thumb.
- Canvas mesh count.
- Specific thread product and skein/card length.
- Number of plies or strands used together.
- Stitch type or consumption factor.
How mesh changes area coverage
Thirteen mesh contains 169 canvas intersections per square inch. Eighteen mesh contains 324. Although an 18-mesh stitch is physically smaller, there are many more stitches in the same area.
Finer mesh often uses fewer plies, so stitches per skein may increase while square-inch coverage follows a less obvious pattern. Use the interactive coverage calculator instead of scaling one published number.
Allow for real stitching conditions
Add 10–15% to a calculated requirement for starting and ending tails, compensation, tension differences, mistakes, and dye-lot safety. Irregular decorative areas may deserve a larger allowance.
