Why blank canvas is necessary

The stitched design is not the same as the canvas cut size. Blank canvas gives you room for stretcher bars or other handling, blocking, edge protection, and the final construction method.

A canvas cut exactly to the painted area can be difficult or impossible for a finisher to secure. Extra canvas is inexpensive compared with restitching a project.

A practical general allowance

For ordinary planning, 2–3 inches of blank canvas on every side is a common working range. Three inches per side is a conservative default in the canvas calculator.

“Three inches per side” adds six inches to both the width and height. A 5 × 7-inch design therefore starts with an 11 × 13-inch canvas cut before any project-specific adjustment.

When to ask the finisher first

The final object may impose different requirements. Contact the intended finisher before cutting or trimming when the piece has a precise construction plan.

• Belts and key fobs with leather ends.
• Pillows requiring seam allowance or a specific finished size.
• Stockings, shaped ornaments, stand-ups, trays, and boxes.
• Pieces that will be professionally blocked or framed.

Do not trim after stitching without instructions

Even when the stitched area looks complete, the surrounding canvas may still be needed for blocking or mounting. Leave it intact until the finisher provides measurements.
